The Organic Acids test from Genova Diagnostics (previously known as Metabolic Analysis Profile) is a nutrition test that evaluates organic acids in a urine sample.
Metabolic processes in the body produce organic acids from the digestion of protein, carbohydrates, and fat. These acids generate cellular energy and provide many of the fundamental pieces necessary for cell function.
The measurement of organic acids provides a way for the physician to perform a functional assessment of the patient nutrient status. A high accumulation of organic acids in urine can suggest a metabolic inhibition or block due to an inherited enzyme deficit, a nutrient deficiency, toxic build-up, or the consequence of a drug effect.
Vitamins and minerals are required for the correct functioning of the enzymes responsible for metabolizing organic acids. Thus, an increase in organic acids in the urine can reflect a functional need for these nutrients on a cellular and biochemical level, even when a serum analysis reflects normal results.
The test results can guide the physician with recommendations for nutrient supplementation.
The Organic Acids Test should be considered for those patients presenting symptoms such as:
Other diseases are associated with increased organic acid levels, such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, depression, anorexia, anxiety, neuro-cognitive decline, cancer, and several others.
The test analyzes over 50 organic acids in a urine sample. The profile report categorizes test results into six major metabolic areas:
Reference ranges are age and gender-specific and are based on a questionnaire-qualified from a healthy cohort.
A first-in-the-morning urine sample is required for the test. Fasting is required overnight. Four days before the test, the physician and some clinicians choose to discontinue non-essential nutritional supplements to get a baseline reading, while others prefer to continue nutritional supplementation to assess the efficacy of their treatments.
*Note: Organic Acids are also a part of the comprehensive NutrEval FMV, NutrEval Plasma, and Metabolomix+ urine nutritional test.
The Organix® (formerly the Organic Acids Test/Metabolic Analysis Profile) assesses important metabolic pathways and provides insights into nutrient status, organic acids, and the body's cellular metabolic process. It is designed to help practitioners identify the root causes of dysfunction and provide a systems-based approach to help patients overcome chronic conditions. This test cannot be ordered for patients under two years of age.
