Both Omega-6 and Omega-3 are essential fats, which means your body can't make them, so you need to get them from the food you eat. Omega-6 fatty acids, found in things like vegetable oils and meat, help with inflammation, which is needed for healing and protecting your body from harmful invaders. Omega-3 fatty acids, found in foods like fish and flaxseeds, help reduce inflammation and support a healthy heart and brain. The balance between these two fats is important because they work together to manage inflammation and promote overall health. Having the right balance helps your body work at its best.
If Your Levels Are High
A high Omega-6/Omega-3 ratio might mean that your diet has too much Omega-6 and not enough Omega-3. This can happen if you eat a lot of processed foods, vegetable oils, and meats, which have lots of Omega-6, and not enough fish and flaxseeds, which are rich in Omega-3. Some medications, like nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), could also affect this balance. Some medications, like those that affect how your body absorbs fats, could also play a role in this imbalance. Additionally, certain health conditions, such as malabsorption disorders, might make it harder for your body to take in these important fats from the food you eat.
