What's
Lyme IgM Band 39
?
Lyme IgM Band 39 is a specific marker used to test for Lyme disease, an infection that spreads through the bite of an infected tick. This marker is part of the body's early defense against the bacteria responsible for Lyme disease, called Borrelia burgdorferi. When your body comes into contact with this bacteria, it creates various antibodies, including IgM, to help fight off the infection. Band 39 is a protein that the Borrelia burgdorferi bacteria produces, and the presence of antibodies against this protein can indicate a recent or ongoing Lyme disease infection.
If Your Levels Are High
Elevated levels of Lyme IgM Band 39 might mean that your body is currently fighting off a recent or ongoing Lyme disease infection, which is caused by the Borrelia burgdorferi bacteria. When your body encounters this bacteria, it produces specific antibodies, like IgM, to help defend itself. Band 39 is a protein made by the bacteria, and having antibodies against it can be a sign of this battle. However, it's important to consider that other factors, such as certain medications or a weakened immune system, could also affect these levels. Additionally, some autoimmune disorders might cause a similar response, leading to higher levels of Lyme IgM Band 39.
Symptoms of High Levels
Symptoms of high levels of Lyme IgM Band 39 could include fatigue, fever, headache, muscle and joint aches, and swollen lymph nodes, which are common in Lyme disease. In some cases, a characteristic skin rash known as erythema migrans may also be present.
If Your Levels are Low
A low level of Lyme IgM Band 39 might mean that your body hasn't recently come across or isn't currently dealing with the bacteria that causes Lyme disease, called Borrelia burgdorferi. This could be because you haven't been exposed to the bacteria, or maybe your immune system hasn't noticed it and hasn't made the specific antibodies to fight it. Some things that could affect your body's ability to make these antibodies include taking certain medications that suppress your immune system, like corticosteroids or chemotherapy drugs, or having a health condition that impacts your immune system.
Symptoms of Low Levels
Symptoms of low levels of Lyme IgM Band 39 are typically non-existent, as this test is more about detecting the presence of a specific response to an infection rather than causing symptoms itself.
