What's
Lyme IgG Band 39
?
Lyme IgG Band 39 is a specific indicator used to test for Lyme disease, an infection spread through the bite of a black-legged tick. This marker is part of a larger test called the Western Blot, which detects antibodies created by your immune system to fight the bacteria causing Lyme disease, known as Borrelia burgdorferi. Band 39 is important because it identifies an antibody that targets a unique protein of the Borrelia burgdorferi bacteria. This protein is often present even in the early stages of the disease, making Band 39 a valuable tool in diagnosing Lyme disease.
If Your Levels Are High
If your Lyme IgG Band 39 levels are higher than normal, it might mean that your body is making more antibodies to fight off the Borrelia burgdorferi bacteria, which is usually linked to Lyme disease. This could be a sign that you've been exposed to the bacteria recently or are currently dealing with an infection, often from a tick bite. Sometimes, things like certain medications that affect your immune system can also play a role in changing these levels. Additionally, other health conditions related to your immune system might be causing the increase in antibodies.
Symptoms of High Levels
Symptoms of high levels of Lyme IgG Band 39 might not be distinct, as this marker primarily indicates an immune response rather than causing symptoms itself. However, if Lyme disease is present, one might experience fatigue, fever, headache, muscle and joint aches, and swollen lymph nodes.
If Your Levels are Low
A low level of Lyme IgG Band 39 might mean that your body hasn't produced a strong response to the bacteria usually linked to Lyme disease, called Borrelia burgdorferi. This could happen for different reasons, like taking the test too early before your body has had time to develop antibodies, or your body not reacting to the bacteria in the usual way. Some medications, especially those that weaken the immune system, could also affect the results. Keep in mind that a low level doesn't necessarily mean you don't have Lyme disease, as everyone's immune response can be different.
Symptoms of Low Levels
Symptoms of low levels of Lyme IgG Band 39 may not be distinct, as this test is more about the body's response to the bacteria rather than the disease's direct effects. However, if Lyme disease is present, symptoms could include fatigue, fever, headache, muscle and joint aches, and swollen lymph nodes.
