What's
HAV IgM
?
HAV IgM is a special protein made by your body's defense system when it comes across harmful substances like viruses. In particular, HAV IgM is created when your body encounters the Hepatitis A virus, which is a very contagious infection that affects the liver. This protein is your body's first line of protection and shows up in your blood within a few weeks after being exposed to the virus. The presence of HAV IgM is like a warning sign from your body, telling you that it's actively fighting against this specific liver infection.
If Your Levels Are High
Elevated levels of HAV IgM might mean that your body is currently fighting off the Hepatitis A virus, which is an infection that mainly targets the liver. This increase in HAV IgM is your immune system's way of defending you from the virus and is usually seen within a few weeks after coming into contact with it. It's important to note that some people might have higher levels of these antibodies naturally, without any signs of infection. Additionally, certain factors like recent vaccinations or specific medications, such as immune-suppressing drugs, could also affect these levels. So, high HAV IgM levels could be a sign that your body is actively dealing with a Hepatitis A infection or that other factors are influencing your immune response.
Symptoms of High Levels
Symptoms of high levels of HAV IgM could include fatigue, nausea, abdominal pain, loss of appetite, and jaundice, which is a yellowing of the skin and eyes.
If Your Levels are Low
A low level of HAV IgM might mean that your body hasn't recently come across or isn't currently fighting the Hepatitis A virus. This could be because you haven't been exposed to the virus, or maybe your body already fought off the infection successfully and doesn't need to make these specific antibodies anymore. Some medications, like immune-suppressing drugs, could also play a role in having lower HAV IgM levels. It's also possible that your body is using other ways to protect itself from threats, which is why this particular antibody might be lower than usual.
Symptoms of Low Levels
Symptoms of low levels of HAV IgM are typically non-existent, as this condition does not directly cause any physical discomfort or noticeable changes in health.
