What's
H. pylori IgG
?
H. pylori IgG refers to the antibodies your body creates in response to an infection by Helicobacter pylori, a type of bacteria that can live in your stomach. This bacteria is unique because it's one of the few that can survive in the very acidic environment of your stomach. It's known for its ability to damage the protective lining of the stomach and upper part of the small intestine, which can lead to ulcers and other digestive problems. The presence of H. pylori IgG in your blood is a clear indication that your body has come into contact with this bacteria at some point.
If Your Levels Are High
Elevated levels of H. pylori IgG might mean that your body has encountered the Helicobacter pylori bacteria, which can live in your stomach and cause harm to its protective lining and the upper part of your small intestine. This damage could potentially lead to issues like gastritis or peptic ulcers. High H. pylori IgG levels could be due to factors such as poor hygiene, eating contaminated food or drinking contaminated water, or being in close contact with someone who has the infection. It's important to note that certain medications, like proton pump inhibitors or antibiotics, could also affect your H. pylori IgG levels.
Symptoms of High Levels
Symptoms of high levels of H. pylori IgG may not always be apparent, as some individuals can carry the bacteria without experiencing any discomfort. However, when symptoms do occur, they could include abdominal pain, bloating, frequent burping, loss of appetite, nausea, and unexplained weight loss. In more severe cases, dark or bloody stools, or vomiting blood could occur, which are signs of potential ulcers.
If Your Levels are Low
Low levels of H. pylori IgG might mean that your body hasn't encountered the Helicobacter pylori bacteria, or it's been a while since the exposure. It could also suggest that your immune system has effectively fought off the bacteria. Certain medications, like antibiotics or proton pump inhibitors, might impact H. pylori IgG levels in your blood. Additionally, low levels could be due to immune system disorders that affect your body's ability to produce antibodies.
Symptoms of Low Levels
Symptoms of low levels of H. pylori IgG are typically absent, as this condition often does not cause noticeable discomfort or changes in health status.
