What's
Anti-Tg
?
Anti-Tg, or Thyroglobulin Antibodies, are substances created by your body's defense system. Usually, your immune system protects you from harmful things like germs and viruses. But sometimes, it can mistakenly attack your own body parts, making antibodies against them. Anti-Tg specifically targets thyroglobulin, a protein in your thyroid gland that is crucial for making thyroid hormones. These hormones are very important for controlling your body's metabolism, affecting everything from your energy levels to your body temperature. So, Anti-Tg has a big impact on how your thyroid works and, in turn, how your body's energy processes function.
If Your Levels Are High
Elevated Anti-Tg levels might mean that your body's defense system is mistakenly attacking your thyroid gland, which could be due to an autoimmune condition or other factors like stress, infections, or certain medications (such as lithium or interferon). This attack on your thyroid can make it harder for your body to produce the thyroid hormones needed to regulate your metabolism, which affects your energy levels and body temperature. High Anti-Tg levels could also be linked to inflammation or damage to the thyroid gland. Some specific conditions that might be associated with increased Anti-Tg levels include Hashimoto's thyroiditis and Graves' disease.
Symptoms of High Levels
Symptoms of high levels of Anti-Tg could include fatigue, weight gain, feeling cold, dry skin, and hair loss.
If Your Levels are Low
Low levels of Anti-Tg might mean that your body isn't producing many antibodies against thyroglobulin, an important protein for making thyroid hormones. This could be due to various reasons, such as your immune system not reacting strongly, taking certain medications like steroids or immunosuppressants, or having a less active thyroid gland. It's also possible that your body doesn't see thyroglobulin as a threat, which could mean your immune system is working well. Keep in mind that Anti-Tg levels can change over time and may not always give a clear picture of your thyroid or immune system's health.
Symptoms of Low Levels
Symptoms of low levels of Anti-Tg are typically not noticeable, as this condition often doesn't present any specific signs.
