Akkermansia muciniphila is a species of bacteria that lives in the gut. It has been linked to improved metabolic health and associated with increased levels of beneficial bacterial metabolites such as short-chain fatty acids. Low levels have also been linked to obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, inflammatory bowel diseases and other disorders related to an unbalanced microbiome.
